I woke up humming this old song from 1969 by the Sandpipers. I first heard it in the movie, The Sterile Cuckoo. with Liza Minnelli, Anyone remember this teen/college movie? I was 15 when it came out and I didn\’t understand a lot of the mature references made at the time.
I attended the movie with 18-year-old college freshmen from San Francisco State University. I felt like such a grown-up plus being with an \”older man\” and all. There was some partial nudity – that I had not ever seen before.
\”You want to peel a ripe tomato?\”
HUH? The theater laughed – The boy laughed – I laughed not to appear immature.
The next day, I asked my Mom what that meant. She had no idea I had gone to see this movie. I guess it was rated M or R. Hey, at least I came to her to ask what it meant.
I don\’t know if I want to see the movie again. I think it would be boring. I am no longer that innocent plus I don\’t care for the same movies I loved as a teen. I no longer care about watching Gidget movies (although they were my favorite) or Connie Francis in Where the Boys Are?
But the song, I still enjoy to this day – brings back memories of being young and dating this young man. I do tend to hum it on beautiful Saturday mornings – I\’ve done this for years. No one knew why.
Come Saturday morning
I\’m goin\’ away with my friend
We\’ll Saturday-spend \’Til the end of the day
Just I and my friend
We\’ll travel for miles In our Saturday smiles
And then we\’ll move on
But we will remember Long after Saturday\’s gone
