Hanging out in old cemeteries

Charity Shipman My 5th Great Grandmother

My hobby I am most passionate about is Genealogy. I do go in spurts – when I\’m not gardening I can spend more time on my family trees etc. One more hobby I have found I really enjoy is taking photos by request of graves here in Shasta County and submitting them to the website, Find-a-Grave
I\’ve been using that website for 11 years, 5 months, and 7 days, as of today. I have created grave memorials for my family as well as for my father-in-law just recently and Nina. I find a lot of comfort in it. I have requested that someone, down in the Sacramento area, take a photo of Nina\’s gravesite – for me until I can get down there. It\’s in a Muslim cemetery.
I also do a lot of editing – other people have done memorials for my Great Grandparents, etc and I want to make sure they are all linked up together for future generations to find (if they even care) but it means a lot to me.
Currently, there are 500 requests from relatives in other states wanting a photo of their loved ones\’ gravesite.
We have some old pioneer graveyards around here. On a nice spring day, it can be very peaceful – many of those old graveyards are up in the hills – with a rough road leading up to it that has been overcome by weeds and vandals. There are many who find honor in the preservation of old graveyards. For those who enjoy our genealogy, we do appreciate their dedication.

I have always enjoyed walking through cemeteries. Frankly, I don't know what to think about this fascination. It is certainly not with death. I think it has to do with the people on the epitaphs. I look at abandoned homes and wonder about who had lived there. One day, we are going to discover we are cousins. Has to be true.

Find-a-Grave? Interesting. I've never heard of it, but it sounds like a lot of people know about it. So very sorry about your niece's death. She was so young. May she rest in peace.

I think my fascination is that I enjoy history and fascinated with the lives that came before us. Who were they? How did they live? Etc.

Find a Grave has been a good tool for searching your family tree.

When I lived in the town I grew up in, I used to go to the cemetery often to see my Mom and Dad. It was always a peaceful time for me, thinking, resting, and praying. That's nice that you are interested in Genealogy, Debby. I am too. : )~Sheri
